A common herb with heart-shaped leaves and tiny white flowers which grows wild in waste places though it may also be cultivated. (Not to be confused with Greater chickweed (Stellaria neglecta) which is larger, up to 3 feet (1 m) tall, and found on hedge banks rather than wild places.) Best in the late summer and early autumn, it is most used as a salad herb but is useful in light aromatic vegetable broths and potato broth. Remove the tough stems and add just before serving. Gather using scissors rather than pulling up by the root.
