Centella asiatica, an herb that is often called gotu kola in English (the name it goes by in Sri Lanka). In Burma it is called myin kwa ywet and the round green leaves are believed to be good for the kidneys, much as dandelion leaves are; they are used fresh to make salads. If you find pennywort in a Southeast Asian or South Asian grocery store, use it in Tender Greens Salad with Crispy Fried Shallots, but don’t cook it at all—just use it well-washed and fresh. Western researchers report that gotu kola leaves seem to have tumor-inhibiting powers.
