Follow the recipe instructions when preparing a cake for the oven. Some cakes are made smooth simply by using the back of a spoon, while others have a dip made in the centre.
To prevent the cake peaking and cracking, make a dip in the centre of the cake with the back of a wet spoon.
Put the cake mixture into the tin and smooth the top with the back of a wet spoon.
