Basil the king of herbs (basileus means ‘king’ in Greek). Not a herb for cooking, but for flavouring salads and for mixing with cheese and pine kernels or walnuts to make Pesto sauce for pasta. Tricky to grow here, but worth a try, since dried basil is unsatisfactory by comparison.
