‘Gourds’ were described as ‘cucumer’ in medieval glossaries, John Wyclif’s Bible also explaining that gourds were commonly known as ‘cucumeres’. The young gourds required for the following receipes would therefore resemble small cucumbers, i.e. courgettes.90
