Fan-shaped scallops are also called pilgrim scallops or coquilles Saint-Jacques in French. This is because the shell is the badge of the pilgrims who worship at the shrine of Saint Jacques, patron saint of Spain; the badge is always pinned to their wide-brimmed hat. Pilgrims travel through France to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spam, where legend has it that the saint is buried.
