A native Chinese tree, related to the magnolia, that has a star-shaped fruit containing a seed. Star anise is similar to anise but stronger and more liquorice-like in flavour. Star anise is an ingredient of Chinese five-spice, and is used in Arabic and Asian cooking, especially Chinese cuisine with pork and duck. Use whole or powdered. Also known as badian.
