Sugar is a collective term used for any soluble sweet-tasting carbohydrate. Generally the different kinds end in -ose: glucose is found in all carbohydrates, this is the form the body uses for energy; sucrose is made from sugar beet or cane; fructose is a fruit sugar found in fruits and vegetables; lactose is a milk sugar found in milk products; maltose is made from grains; and dextrose is also made from grains. The chemical composition of the various different types of sugar affects how the body absorbs them, how they affect your metabolism, and what they do to your appetite.
