  • About
Sandwiches based on Italian rolls or French bread and filled with multiple layers of ingredients are known by various names throughout the United States, including hoagie, hero, submarine, Italian sandwich, grinder, bomber, torpedo, rocket, spuckie, wedge, and zeppelin. These made-to-order sandwiches originally consisted of cold cuts, cheese, and lettuce garnished with a choice of tomatoes, onion, pickles, or peppers and dressed with mayonnaise, oil, or mustard. Fillings were later expanded to include other choices, such as tuna, meatballs, sandwich steaks, and various vegetarian options.
