Australasian ‘salmon’ is now the official marketing name in Australia for two species of fish which are not even distantly related to the salmon of the northern hemisphere, but belong to the family Arripididae. They are two species: Arripis trutta (also known as ‘salmon trout’) and A. truttaceus. In the same genus there is another species which makes better eating. This is A. georgianus, popularly known as the ruff or tommy ruff (again, nothing to do with anything bearing that name in the Old World), but now officially called ‘Australian herring’ (one more aberration).
