dog cockle the inappropriate English name given to a bivalve, Glycymeris glycymeris, which has a distribution from Norway and the Baltic down to the Mediterranean and the Canaries, and which is eaten in France, Spain and Portugal, and Italy. It may measure just over 6 cm (2.5"), and the shells are usually white or cream, with irregular zigzag markings. Well worth eating, but not outstandingly good.
