Eland

eland Taurotragus oryx, the largest African antelope, has some importance as food; attempts have been made to farm small domesticated herds in S. Africa (and have been successful in the Ukraine). An adult male eland may measure 1.75 m (just under 6') in height up to the throat, and weigh around 600 kg (1,350 lb). The eland, which has distinctive spiral horns, thrives under conditions (as regards supplies of food and water, and also tsetse fly infestation) in which cattle cannot survive. Also, an eland can be milked, and its milk keeps very well.
