gudgeon Gobio gobio, a small freshwater fish of C. and N. Europe and W. Asia, typically found in shoals on clean river bottoms. It has a roundish body with a series of dark blotches down the side, and reaches a maximum length of 20 cm (8"). A good food fish, eaten with appreciation in some European countries.
