  • About

guitarfish Rhinobatos rhinobatos, one of the few species of fish which are intermediate between sharks and rays. The shape explains the common names. Maximum length 1 m (40"). Range: the Mediterranean and the E. Atlantic from Portugal down to Angola. A fish of only moderate quality, not prominent in the markets.

In the Indo-Pacific there are species of similar shape, notably Rhynchobatis djiddensis, known as the shovel-nose ray or sand shark and occasionally referred to as a guitar fish. It may reach a length of 3 m (10') and is an important game fish in parts of southern Africa and Australia. It makes much better eating than the Mediterranean species.
