Jug a verb referring to a method of cookery which involves putting what is to be cooked (e.g. pieces of hare) in a jug or jar, or something of similar shape, with liquid and simmering it therein. The jug or jar may be stood, for this purpose, in a pan of boiling water. Cooking by this method is usually long and slow.

It is also possible to jug a kipper by lowering it into a jug or jar which is then filled with boiling water and left to stand for a few minutes.
