  • About

maidenhair berry the fruit of a trailing plant, Chiogenes hispidula, which occurs principally in Canada, but also in the state of Maine where it is known as ‘moxie-plum’. Another Canadian name for it is ‘capillaire’; and it is also called ‘creeping snowberry’. The ivory-white berries are juicy and:

pleasantly acid, with a mild suggestion of checkerberry, but when eaten with cream and sugar they are one of the greatest delicacies of the northern woods, having, in addition to the mild, lemon-like acidity and the checkerberry-flavor, a suggestion in their aroma of heliotrope.
