pochard Aythya ferina, a diving duck of Europe and Asia which favours still inland waters and has a largely vegetarian diet. Size is moderate (average total length 45 cm/18"). It is regarded as good table fare.

The pochard has close relations in N. and S. America, E. Africa, and elsewhere.
