prince a suitable name for Agaricus augustus, a large edible mushroom of great merit which occurs in most parts of Europe—for example, Germany, France, and Italy, and occasionally in Britain—and the north-west of N. America. It is not common anywhere, but sometimes grows in groups. The cap, which is light yellowish-brown covered with darker brown scales and may measure 20 or even 25 cm (8 or 10") across, is perched on a thick, relatively short, whitish stalk. The flesh bruises yellow. The aroma is of bitter almonds.
