  • About

Reputed to number 1,000 or more, these deserve a book to themselves, and indeed have one famous one: Erich Lissner’s Wurstologia (1939). In this and other works elaborate classifications are given, but in practice there are just three major categories. A whole new section might be added to encompass Currywurst, Germany’s favourite street food, comprising a fried sausage of the Brühwurst type liberally doused with a curried ketchup. By most accounts, this was created in occupied Berlin in 1949 (there is a Currywurst museum there) and has spread throughout the country, with regional variations a marked characteristic.
