These include:

  • The sand sole (also known as French sole), Pegusa lascaris, ranges from the Mediterranean to Britain, length up to 35 cm (14").

  • The thickback sole, Microchirus variegatus, is somewhat smaller but has a thicker body.

  • Klein’ sole (not a name which fishmongers would use, but the only available English name), Synapturichthys kleinii, is a Mediterranean species of fine quality.

  • The black sole, Brachirus orientalis, is a species of the Indo-Pacific.
