The sand sole (also known as French sole), Pegusa lascaris, ranges from the Mediterranean to Britain, length up to 35 cm (14").
The thickback sole, Microchirus variegatus, is somewhat smaller but has a thicker body.
Klein’ sole (not a name which fishmongers would use, but the only available English name), Synapturichthys kleinii, is a Mediterranean species of fine quality.
The black sole, Brachirus orientalis, is a species of the Indo-Pacific.
