Swiss roll a confection made by rolling up a thin oblong sheet of sponge cake spread with jam to make a roll. When sliced the cake reveals a spiral of thick yellow sponge cake with a thin stripe of jam.

There are many variations on this idea. Some are rich confections, often using chocolate-flavoured sponge rolled up with whipped cream. A special variety is the French bûche de Noël. (See christmas foods.)
