wreckfish Polyprion americanum, a large (maximum length 2 m/80") greyish or dark brown fish of the family Perchichthyidae, related to the grouper family.
It takes its name from its habit of lurking in wrecked ships or similar debris. Its range includes the S. and N. Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It occurs as far north as Norway and Newfoundland, but rarely, and is indeed not common anywhere. It is prepared like groupers.
