Shrimp, also called prawns, are the most popular crustacean worldwide. They are harvested in such huge amounts that shrimp farming is now widely practiced in all parts of the world. In the United States, most of the wild shrimp brought to the commercial market is from the Gulf of Mexico and along the California coast. Wild shrimp is found in many other coastal areas, but it is generally consumed locally. In many places, very small shrimp are called “shrimp,” while large ones are called “prawns.”
