Wagyu beef - a Japanese breed of cattle, the most expensive beef to buy in the world. The only pure herds of wagyu are found in Japan - the Japanese government has banned the export of live cattle - although every wagyu in America and Australia is descended from the only four cattle ever sent abroad to the USA. These were then cross-bred with non-wagyu and whilst they’re good, they’re not as good as some of the NZ wagyu being produced. The NZ herds from Hawke’s Bay are purer due to an intensive breeding programme that has recently been initiated.
