Ghanaian adinkra symbols are icons that represent visually traditional wisdom and themes, concepts, proverbs, nature, or behavior. They are frequently stamped/carved on cloth, pottery, jewelry, and walls or incorporated into furniture, signs, and used as logos. Originating among the Asante people, they are now widely embraced throughout the country. The two symbols used in this book are:
Gye nyame (“except God”), referring to the omnipotence of God
Asase ye duru (“the earth has weight”), referring to the importance of mother earth in sustaining life.
