Small African seed related to cardamom, and also a member of the ginger family, once used as a substitute for black peppercorns; used for seasoning food and as a medicine in Africa, in Europe during the 1400s, and to treat and prevent slave illnesses during the Middle Passage; still grown and used in Ghana
