The Ministry of Agriculture sends the following communication: — ‘Genuine cider is probably the healthiest and most refreshing of all fermented drinks and has been brewed in Europe almost since the dawn of history.
‘History relates that the apple tree was known and appreciated by the Aryan races of Northern Europe long before their separation into the Slavonians, Germans, and Celts. The apple tree was to them as the date tree was to the Austrians, Babylonians and Assyrians, and the vine to the Persians, Greeks and Romans. When the Ancient Britons came to settle in this country they brought with them a few apple trees and it is thought that the Phoenicians taught them to manufacture the drink now known as cider.
