  • About

A state on the coast of eastern India, bordered on the north by Bengal and on the south by Andhra Pradesh; the capital is Bubaneshwar. Orissa has a mountainous interior next to a narrow coastal plain. It has long been a producer and exporter of cotton textiles; it also has the largest concentration of ancient temples in the Subcontinent. Though the majority of the population is Hindu, there are important numbers of tribal people, mostly living in the thickly forested hills. See also “Orissa”.
