  • About

Family Belonidae

REMARKS Maximum length 80 cm. The garfish is capable of leaping out of the water, is often found in shoals, and comes in from the deep waters towards the coast for the period of reproduction (February-May).

Several sub-species of the garfish exist in the Mediterranean. The differences between them are not very arresting. But it is worth mentioning that the sub-species Belone belone euxini Günther is the one which is common in the Black Sea. It is known as zargan or morska bekasa in Bulgaria, as zargani in Romania and as sargan on the Russian Black Sea coast.
