  • About

Family Gadidae

REMARKS Maximum length 40 cm. Found in shallow inshore waters in the western basin of the Mediterranean, but less common here than in the Atlantic.

The sub-species Merlangius merlangus euxinus (Nordmann) may be found as far west as the Adriatic, but it belongs essentially to the Black Sea, as euxinus indicates. It is medjid (cf. the Turkish name) in Bulgaria and bacaliar (cf. the Greek name) in Romania. The Russians call it merlanca or Chernomorskaya piksha; but the local name gokak is still current on the Georgian coast.
