Maximum length 200 cm. Note the prominent cheekbone to the rear of the eye. The colour is generally dark. This species is not found in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, and is not common in the market, as it has to be fished with a line and hook at a depth of 150 metres or so. Its range extends across the Atlantic to American waters.
