REMARKS Maximum length 100 cm. The fish is usually a reddish or yellowish brown, with dark patches (epinephelus means ‘with clouds upon it’). This is the most common species of mérou. Over 50% of the fish of this name in the Mediterranean belong to this species, while the mérou blanc and mérou noir on the next page account for about 25% and 10% respectively.
