Sea Bream Couch’s Sea Bream

Pagrus Pagrus Pagrus (Linnaeus)

Appears in

  • About

Family Sparidae

REMARKS Maximum length 75 cm. This and the next species have rosy tints on their backs and sides. This one alone has white tips to the tail.

This is the only Mediterranean bream which occurs also on the western side of the Atlantic. The explanation seems to be that its eggs have been, and probably still are carried over by the westerly current to the Caribbean and that the lengths of time required for this journey and for their hatching happily coincide. Americans know the species as the red porgy.
