Dentex Gibbosus (Rafinesque)

  • About

Family Sparidae

REMARKS Maximum length is 100 cm, common length 30 to 50 cm. The general colour is rosy. The third spine of the dorsal fin extends into a long filament, as shown. Older fish lose this characteristic but instead develop a pronounced forehead, which gives them a quaintly intellectual air. Such a fish may be called denté bossu. It may also be called pagre (royal) in Tunisia and Algeria, which can be confusing in relation to Pagrus pagrus pagrus (P-77).
