Bogue

Boops Boops (Linnaeus)

  • About

Family Sparidae

REMARKS Maximum length 35 cm. The name boops signifies having big (literally, ox-) eyes. The colour is mainly silver, with yellowish tints. This is one of the species which account for a high proportion of the Maltese catches.

CUISINE Wheeler observes that the flesh of the bogue seems to vary in quality, no doubt in response to the type of food that the fish consume. Maybe 1 shall come across one some day which has consistently eaten with good judgement. But according to my experience so far and the general repute of the fish, the bogue is not particularly good, although it can be given any of the standard treatments.
