Pilot Fish

Naucrates Ductor (Linnaeus)

Appears in

Published 1981

  • About

Family Carangidae

REMARKS Maximum length 60 cm. Not very common, although taken in large numbers round Malta. Apt to follow ships or to swim in front of sharks, whence the name. Faber (Fisheries of the Adriatic, 1883) recorded that on one occasion a vessel arrived in Fiume accompanied by no fewer than twenty pilot fish. Perhaps they were mostly young ones, on a training exercise.
