* I have now catalogued five species of the family Triglidae, which is quite enough. But I mention here two others. Aspitrigla obscura (Linnaeus), the long-finned gurnard, is reddish grey in colour with a pearly pink lateral line and a very long spine at the front of the first dorsal fin. It is less common than the preceding species. Lepidotrigla cavillone (Lacepède) is the smallest Mediterranean gurnard (maximum length 15 cm) and suitable only for use in fish soups. The usual gurnard names are applied to it; also caviglione (Italian), cabete (Spanish) and capet (Catalan).
The armed gurnard which appears on the next page belongs to the family Peristediidae.
The so-called flying gurnard, not catalogued because rarely eaten, belongs to yet another family, Cephalacanthidae.
