REMARKS Maximum length 100 cm or perhaps more. The back is usually a brownish or yellowish grey, spotted with little black and white spots and covered with bony protuberances like nail-heads, very noticeable in the Black Sea variety which appears around the Bosphorus in the spring – Psetta maxima maeotica (Pallas), a drawing of which appears on page 18.
