Maximum length 50 cm. There may be two sub-species here – Platichthys flesus flesus and Platichthys flesus luscus. According to those who make the distinction the former is found in the western Mediterranean only, while the latter is more generally distributed, although most plentiful in the Adriatic. The back is brown, grey or olive, sometimes spotted with black or orange; or a plain green-black.
