  • About

Family Portunidae

REMARKS The body has a maximum width of 8 cm. This is the largest of a group of about eight small swimming crabs (Fr. crabes nageurs), all of which can be distinguished from the shore crab by the enlarged ends of their rear legs, which permit them to swim. Liocarcinus corrugatus Pennant, another, is distinguished by corrugations on its carapace. It may be called by the Catalan name cranc (cf. preceding entry) in France, as well as in Spain.
