Horn-Shell

Cerithium Vulgatum (Bruguière)

Appears in

  • About

Family Cerithiidae

REMARKS Length up to 7 cm. Rather like an ice-cream cone with an opening bent over sideways. Of a brown or greenish colour, but this is variable, as is the size.

CUISINE See Top-Shell. In the Romagna a special soup is made of these creatures, called Zuppa di Garagoli. The same soup may be prepared with Aporrhais pespelecani (Linnaeus) (Italian crocetta or pie di pelicano), which is a similar creature, distinguished by the fact that one lip of its shell fans out into a shape like a webbed foot. This second species is available in British waters, e.g. off the Northumbrian coast, and is illustrated below. Its English name, unsurprisingly, is pelican foot shell.
