Pecten Jacobaeus (Linnaeus)

Appears in

By Alan Davidson

Published 1981

  • About

Family Pectinidae

REMARKS The shells, which run up to 14 cm, are often used as dishes for small servings of fish gratiné.

The scallops swim around by opening and closing their shells so that the expulsion of the water drives them along. The muscle joining the two halves of the shell is therefore large and powerful.
