REMARKS Not more than 6 cm across. The strongly ridged shell is yellowish grey in colour. This and the smaller Chamelea gallina (Linnaeus) are called vongola in Italy, but cf. the next entry. C. gallina is illustrated below.

Salamis is one good hunting ground for this species. They are also quite common in British waters, yet unknown in British markets.
