  • About

Ashen Woodwax Hygrophorus mesotephrus Berk. (illustrated 65% life size) Cap 2–4cm across, convex then centrally depressed; dull grey-brown with a much darker centre; viscid. Stem 60–100×7–10mm; white at apex, very glutinous and browning below. Flesh white; taste and smell not recorded. Gills decurrent; white. Spores 9–12×6–8¼, ellipsoid. Spore print white. Habitat under deciduous trees; late summer to early winter. Rare. Not edible. Note my picture is much too brown, it should be dull grey-brown.
