Soft Puffball Lycoperdon molle Pers. (illustrated 50% life size) Fruit body 1–4cm across, 6cm high, usually pear-shaped; milky coffee-coloured to greyish-brown; minutely granular or spiny; opening by a wide, irregular pore. Gleba white, dark brown when mature; sterile base with large chambers, wide or narrowed to a distinct stalk. Spores 3.5–5¼ in diameter, globose. Habitat on soil or humus in deciduous or coniferous forests; late summer to autumn. Frequent. Edible when flesh is white.
