Family Gadidae

  • French: Eglefin
  • Dutch: Schelvis
  • German: Schellfisch
  • Russian: Piksha
  • Swedish: Kolja
  • Norwegian: Hyse
  • Danish: Kuller
  • Icelandic: Ýsa

REMARKS Maximum length 80 cm, although giants over a metre long have been taken; market length 40 to 60 cm. The back is of a dark greenish-brown or purplish-grey. The lateral line is black and there is a ‘thumbprint’ on the side, as shown in the drawing. In this the haddock resembles the John Dory, and fishermen at Boulogne therefore call it faux Saint-Pierre, or by the curious name calevés, which may be of Spanish origin, as some survivors of the Armada settled there.
