REMARKS Maximum length 275 cm (exceptionally, normal maximum 175 cm, market length around 1 metre). Colour varies according to habitat.

The conger ranges from the Mediterranean to the south and west coasts of Britain and, in smaller numbers, up to Norway and Iceland. On the American side of the North Atlantic there is a close relation, Conger oceanicus (Mitchill), which is found south from Cape Cod. It is not, however, fished or eaten to any great extent by North Americans.
