REMARKS Maximum length 60 cm. This fish is orange or red all over, so the first word in the English name is justified; but it is not a bream, which is why I put the second one in quotation marks. It is a deep-water fish, found from the Bay of Biscay northwards and occasionally marketed.

Further south, the species Beryx splendens Lowe is to be found. It is less deep in the body and has a maximum length of 40 cm. Its Spanish name, oddly, is besugo americano, meaning American bream.
