Family Serranidae

REMARKS Maximum length about 125 cm. Despite its name, this fish is usually brown in colour, with some mottling. It provides a good example of the groupers which are found in offshore waters on the eastern seaboard, up to or even beyond Cape Hatteras, as explained. Others are the smaller Epinephelus adscensionis (Osbeck), the rock hind; Epinephelus drummondhayi Goode and Bean, the speckled hind or strawberry grouper; and some larger species, including the giant Warsaw grouper, Epinephelus nigritus (Holbrook).
