REMARKS Maximum length 70 cm. Adult fish are rose or grey-red in colour. Note the dark spot on the shoulder, the depth of the body and the size of the eye.

This species is the only member of the family which is common in European Atlantic waters. It is found in the English Channel and off the south-west and west coasts of the British Isles; and it goes further north in warm weather. It is the subject of a small commercial fishery, mainly by French and Spanish boats.
